Our Learning in Year 5

Phasels Wood Trip

This week Year 5 went on a fantastic trip to Phasels Wood. Despite worries about the heat, we had a brilliant day and stayed cool by setting up camp in the wooded area. The whole class really enjoyed themselves and were really motivated and confident on the diferent activities we did including high ropes, archery, aeroball and team challenges. Below are some pictures from the day. Simple click on the first picture to load up more.

This week in DT, Year 5 have started creating Doodlers. These are macanical robots designed to doodle. The pupils had to work together to make a circuit involving a battery and a motor. This was then attached to a cup which had pens for supports. When the circuit was connected, the doodler would create a pattern. Here are some videos of the Doodlers in action.

Swimming

This week, Year 5 were very excited to begin their swimming topic in P.E. I was extrememly impressed by how confident, motivated and perseverant the pupils were. We have started developing our front crawl techniques as well as playing some games. We even got to link our swimming to our science topic on water resistance by creating a wirlpool!

GOAL DAY

This week Year 5 took part in a survival GOAL Day inspired by our class book Kensuke's Kingdom by Michael Murpurgo. The pupils learnt about the rule of three for survival: 3 hours without shelter, 3 days without water and 3 weeks without food. We therefore learnt how to build shelters to a specific design brief, created a water purifier using the sun and also learnt how to use a magnifying glass to start a fire using refraction from the sun.
