In activity 3, you can use the planning frame to plan then write your own adventure story - you just need to make sure your character faces a problem and tell how they overcome it (it they do at all). The story only needs to be about 500 words long, and you could use the character and setting you created earlier on this week. I am looking forward to reading your stories.
Maths: Please revise key aspects of maths with this online lesson: Maths Challenges for Year 5. Many of the questions are word problems, so don't forget to use RUCSAC!
Reading: Please read for at least 15 minutes and enter the golden ticket draw.
D&T: Complete this online lesson: Mechanical Systems. This is about the use of cams and followers. Watch the videos then choose either activity 1 or 2, depending on the resources you have.
TT Rockstars: Please play for at least 15 minutes.
Good morning everyone. Have a look at the daily briefings - there are some key reminders on there. Also have a look at the challenge set by Mr Barron and see if you can have a go. Also, have you noticed that The Oompa Loomps have gone missing from the Golden Tickets page...see if you can find them. I would have a good look on the pages on the Home Learning section of the website.
Don't forget to enter the golden ticket draw this week. It would be good to have another Y5 winner.
Have a good day.
English: Watch the videos and complete the activities to practise using fronted adverbials. For an extra challenge, have a read back of your setting descriptions from yesterday and add in some fronted adverbials. Also, did you spot the fronted adverbials in the example setting description yesterday? Go back and check!
Reading: Have you sent in a drawing of your favourite book character to the golden tickets address? Lot's of people have sent all sorts, and I noticed David Walliams characters have been especially popular. So, please read all about David Walliams in the comprehension above and complete the questions. You can choose your challenge.
Maths: Have a go at at finding fractions of amounts. You will need to use RUCSAC to solve the word problems. Top tip to remember: divide by the bottom, times by the top!
French: Please complete this french lesson about school and hobbies. Watch the videos then look at the flashcards. To help you remember these, it would be a good idea to write the different terms in English and then translate them into French in your home learning exercise book.
TT Rockstars: Final chance to get a high place on the TT Rockstars leaderboard. Please play for at least 15 minutes.
Hello everyone. I hope you are keeping well.
Did you guess the Secret Reader yet? I got it straight away! Have a listen and send your guesses by 11am today.
Also, don't forget to practise TT Rockstars and read 5 times for the golden ticket draw.
Let's keep adding our proudest pieces to the slideshow above - the work that has been added so far is fantastic and brilliant quality!
Have a brilliant day.
English: Today you will be learning about setting descriptions as well as a bit of SPaG looking at subordinating conjunctions. Please watch the videos and then have a go at the quiz. After that, read the example of a description of a deserted classroom and think about what makes it effective. Then on activity 3, look at the checklist of features of a setting description and check you found them all, then write your own setting including these features. Don't forget you can magpie ideas from the example!
Reading: Please read to an adult for 15 minutes to count towards your golden ticket draw. Improve your vocabulary by completing the activity above.
Maths: Please complete this lesson about multiplying mixed number fractions by a whole number.
Science: If we were at school, we would be learning about animals including humans as our Science topic. Please complete this lesson about life cycles of humans. We touched on the life cycle of animals earlier on during your home learning last half term, so hopefully some of that knowledge helps you with this.
Good morning Year 5.
I hope you got to enjoy the sunshine today and got on well with your home learning. Thank you to the children who are sending lots of work through - I have added some pieces to the slideshow above. Do send me some work from this week to be added to this.
I'd like to remind you of a few things today to make sure we are back on track with your home learning:
Here are today's activities. I hope you have a fantastic day!
English: In this lesson, you will be creating a character and thinking of good ways to describe your character. Your character can be anything you like, so be creative! The lesson also covers how to use semi-colons in a sentence to describe a character. This can be tricky, so do watch the video and if you are still not sure, read the slides I have attached. Once you have planned your character, for an extra challenge have a go at writing 5 descriptive sentences with a semi colon.
Top tip: We use semi-colons to replace a full stop or a conjunction in a sentence when the two sentences are about the same thing.
The woman had menacing eyes. They were as dark as the night's sky.
I can take the full stop out and replace it with a semi-colon because it the second sentence is still about the woman's eyes.
The woman had menacing eyes; they were as dark as the night's sky.
His cape was yellow and hers was green.
I can get rid of 'and' and put a semi colon because both parts of the sentences are about capes.
His cape was yellow; hers was green.
Maths: I would like to make sure that you are super confident with converting improper fractions to mixed number fractions before we continue multiplying these types of fractions. Remember an improper fraction is when the numerator is bigger than the denominator. Please read the slides to explore some examples of improper fractions and what they mean and how diagrams show us what they look like as a mixed number fraction. Then have a go at the activity, choosing either challenge 1 star, 2 stars or 3 stars.
Geography: Please complete this lesson where you will be learning about fossil fuels renewable energy. Watch the videos then complete the activities.
Good morning Year 5!
Wow it's a new half term. Hasn't that gone quick! I hope you all had a fantastic half term break. I especially enjoyed the sunshine and I hope you did too.
Thank you for the pieces of work you have sent me so far. As promised, I will be making a slideshow later today with all the pieces so please keep sending them through to email@example.com so I can see your CHAMP skills in action! I especially enjoyed seeing your positive thinking activities lately! Don't forget you can send through anything you would like to share with the class, not just school work! We love seeing it all!
Reading: Please complete this reading lesson where you will be making comparisons across books. You will be reading different versions of Little Red Riding Hood and answering comprehension questions based on these. Don't forget to read to an adult for 15 minutes to count towards your 5 reads for the golden ticket draw.
English: Please complete this lesson about synonymns and antonymns. You will need a theasurus to help you with the activites!
Maths: Please complete this lesson about multiplying fractions with whole numbers. You can choose which activity you would like to complete.
History: To finish our unit of The Celts, the Romans eventually invaded and took over. An important Celt called Boudicca (the wife of the King of one of the Celtic tribes) was significant for trying to fight the Romans as they tried to take over. Watch this video and read the slides above to learn more. Then further research Boudicca to learn more and create a poster showing what you have learnt. You could included a drawing of Bouddica in the middle with different facts around it! Be creative!
TT Rockstars: Can you earn 1500 coins?
Well it's the end of another half term! Can you believe it? You have all worked extremely hard and have earned a well deserved break, so give yourselves a big pat on the back for being such CHAMPs and enjoy some relaxation time over the half term. Thank you parents as well for all your support!
Did you catch the Daily Briefing yesterday? There was a TT Rockstars update and it seems we are pretty close to being at the top. Fingers crossed!! You also get to have a sneak peak inside the school.
Also, Mr Wonka let me in to a little secret during the week and apparently Y5 have entered the most 5 word book reviews and drawings of their favourite book characters! Well done!! If the reward is an extra golden ticket, then could we be the class with the most golden tickets this week? It would be lovely to end the half term with yet another Year 5 winner! Let's wait and see...
Lot's of you have been completing Science experiments at home which is brilliant and I hope you had fun creating them. Here's a couple more of the rainbow experiment, this seems to be a popular one and I can see why! They're fantastic!
Finally, because you have worked so hard I have set a PSHE lesson today all about positive thinking. I hope some of the ideas for keeping a happy mind are useful to you and perhaps you will take up a new hobby or challenge over the half term such as cooking. I am currently learning new crafts and am really enjoying trying something new and challenging myself. I am going to have to persevere to finish these off! I really do love receiving your emails and pictures of your work so please keep sending this through to firstname.lastname@example.org it makes Mrs Happe and I happy to see what you have been doing.
Have a wonderful half term, keep positive and keep smiling!
English: Please complete this reading lesson based on the book 'A Pocketful of Stars. Listen to the extracts then complete activities 1 and 2, where you will be practising selecting evidence for your answers. For an extra challenge, complete activity 3, where you will be writing a diary entry as if you are one of the characters from the story.
Reading: Please read for 15 minutes. Don't forget to send your 5 reads to email@example.com today!
Maths: Please complete this maths lesson where you will be revising some key pieces of learning. This covers lots of different bits of maths from word problems to shapes. Check your answers at the end.
PSHE: Please read the information above about positive thinking. Then choose an activity to complete. There are a range to choose from, such as colouring in, designing a postive thinking cap and planning how you can include some positive activities in your week. Choose as many as you like and please do send them to me. It would be lovely to receive enough to create a class slideshow to remind us to stay positive.
TT Rockstars: Can you improve your accuracy?
Hello everyone. It was fantastic to see you all on the video call yesterday thank you for joining it! I loved speaking to you all and I hope you enjoyed the scavenger hunt, it was lots of fun!
I wanted to say a big thank you to those who sent a thank you e-card yesterday it put a huge smile on my face! Thank you as well for sending in lots of pictures of work and other things you have been up I really appreciate it.
Dont forget to watch the Daily Briefing's and email me any questions you have.
Also, Sindi and Ben have sent videos of their Science experiments - they're fantastic! Have a look at them!
Finally, have you seen the fantastic drawings of book characters as part of the Oompa Loompa challenge? Take a look at the Golden Tickets page to have a look and do send one in if you haven't already, we love seeing your work! On the subject of Golden Tickets, have you entered the draw yet? Remember you can email what you have read 5 times, it doesn't have to be a picture of your planner if you aren't able to! Hopefully we get another Y5 winner. We have had Lia and Caitlin so far! Good luck!
English: Please complete this activity about writing a thank you letter. Here you will revise the features of letters, and then write a thank you letter to our health heroes! Although the activity is designed for health heroes, you could choose to write the letter to someone else, like your parents or a friend. It's your choice! As an extra challenge, can you add in some of your learning from earlier this week, such as using a simile? I'd love to read your letters once you have written them!
Reading: Complete the reading comprehension and then read for at least 15 minutes. Send your 5 reads to firstname.lastname@example.org
Maths: Continue to learn about fractions, this time by subtracting mixed number fractions. Please watch the videos then have a go at the activities. Top tip: you may need to change a fraction so that it has the same denominator to make it easier!
Computing: This is the next lesson on coding and computer games. This lesson is about what makes a good game from designing the game to choosing a character. Complete the activity to design your character and if you like create a game. I understand that many of you are confident with Scratch and have made games already, so if you feel you have already mastered this, then I have set another activity above which you could complete instead. This teaches you to draw shapes on Scratch and there are different challenges to choose from. I look forward to seeing what you create!
TT Rockstars: Last chance to push up our place on the leaderboard! Please play for at least 15 minutes to improve your speed and accuracy. Where will the Strumming Steadman's come this week...
Good morning Year 5. Today is the day for our second Zoom video call! It will start at 12pm and your parents will receive a text to let you know the meeting ID and password around 15 minutes beforehand. I can't wait to see all your smiling faces again!!
Also, have you guessed the Secret Reader? I have a funny feeling that Year 5 will be particularly good at this one Make sure to have a look if you haven't already!! We could be the class with the most correct guesses.
Don't forget to send a drawing of your favourite book character as part of the Oompa Loompa Challenge on the Golden Tickets page. Your work will go on display in the school along with our 5 word book reviews. I would also like to upload some of these to our page.
Finally, I just wanted to say how amazed I am with all your art and D&T work based around the Celts. I can see you have put in so much effort into it and I hope you enjoyed creating them. Thanks again parents for all your support and hard work
Have a fantastic day and hope to see lots of you later on!
English: Please complete this SPaG lesson about modal verbs, then complete the activities. Please also complete the spelling activity above.
Reading: Please complete the comprehension above and then read for at least 15 minutes. Remember to record this and send your 5 reads to email@example.com. Don't forget to send your drawing of your favourite book character to this address too.
Maths: Continue to learn about fractions by completing this lesson about adding two mixed number fractions. Then complete the activities.
Science: Please choose one of the Science experiments to do at home above. There are plenty of interesting ones that do not require many resources. Please take pictures or videos of your experiments to share with the rest of the class. Have fun!!
Finley already had a go at the rainbow experiment! Well done!
Good morning. Well done to the children who guessed the Secret Reader correctly! Did you know there is a new Oompa Loompa challenge on the website? You will need to draw a picture of a book character to go on display. This will be your reading task for today (see more information below). I hope you enjoy it and am looking forward to seeing your drawings!!
I wanted to share with you some of the Celtic shields that children have made. They are fantastic and are really creative! Well done you!! Thank you to the children who have sent me designs too they are also excellent. I understand that if you did choose to make your shield you may need a little longer to complete it - that's fine but do send me a picture when you have finished to upload for everyone to see!
Also, I am thrilled to tell you that I will be holding our next Zoom chat on Wednesday 20th May at 12pm. Your parents will get a text 15 minutes before the chat begins with an ID and password, just like last week. I can't wait to speak to you all again. If there is something you would particularly like to share, do bring it along to the chat to show!
Here are today's activities. Have a fantastic day and keep being motivated!!
English: Please complete this lesson about paragraphs. Watch the video and then complete the activities. Top tip: remember, we organise our paragraphs into themes!
Reading: Please complete the Oompa Loompa challenge by drawing one of your favourite book characters. I am going to have a go at this too - I wonder who you will pick! Please include the title of the book and the character's name and make sure to make them colourful!
Maths: Please complete this lesson about fractions. For this lesson you will need to use your learning from previous lessons such as adding fractions and converting improper and mixed fractions.
Top tip: First add the wholes, then add the fractions. If they have a different denominator, then multiply one of the fractions to make it the same denominator. Then add the fractions together.
On Part B, there is an example where the answer gives and improper fraction of 14/12. Remember we can change this fraction to 1 whole and 2/12. Here is my own example to help you understand:
History/Art/DT: I understand that many of you are still making your Celtic shields. If you would prefer to continue with this activity or to make another with a different design that's absolutely fine! If you have however finished your shield, then why not try drawing a Celtic knot? Read the slides above about Celtic art, then use the instructions to draw your own. There are plenty of videos demonstrating this on YouTube too with lots of different designs like this video, so have a look at these if you are struggling! Don't forget you can colour your knot in any way you like! We are being very creative this week so do send me your work!!
Good morning Year 5. Well we are onto another week of home learning but it is the last week of term! Can you believe it! It's gone so quickly. Even though it has been a strange time lately, you have all made me so proud with your perseverance and motivation with your home learning and I am really impressed with all of your hard work. Thank you parents for your continued support as always.
First of all, have you seen the TT Rockstars leaderboard? Lots of you must have listened to my mention of in on our oom call last week because we made the top 3! Well done to everyone who practised and a special well done to our top 3 players: Jody Valenzuela, Tommy Owen and Nina Andrews!
Also a big well done for those of you who took part in the Great Gade Valley Year 5 Quiz! Lots of you took part and did very well, but it is time for me to reveal the winners..... Well done to....
Ophelia, Emmy-Lou, Evie and Norine!!!! You guys got 10/10 on the quiz!
Lots of people came really close, including: Finley, Ted, Emma, Luca and Harun, however, some people just forgot to either simplify their fractions or had made just 1 mistake so well done for doing so well!! I will have to make my next one a bit harder look out for that!
The answers were:
Finally, I enjoyed our Zoom chat so much that I would very much like to hold another one. We have had a few technical difficulties at school, but it should be up and running this week, so do look out for an email with more details of this soon. I will also post more information on this on tommorow's page. I can't wait to see you all again!!
Have a fantastic day and keep being CHAMPS!!
English: Please complete this lesson about metaphors and similes. Please complete all 3 activities, to have a good practise with this. I will be particularly interested with what you come up with for the NHS nurses and doctors activity, as well as how you change a simile to a metaphor. Please send these!!
Reading: Please complete the activity then read for 15 minutes.
Spellings: Please practise this week's spellings by completing the activity above.
Maths: We are continuing to learn about fractions. Today, you will be adding and subtracting fractions and will need to use some of the skills you have learnt from last week's lessons on fractions. Watch the videos then complete the activities.
TT Rockstars: We came 3rd last week which is good, but can we do better this week? Please try to earn at least 1500 coins.
History: The Celts lived during the Iron Age, and therefore used iron for many of their resources, especially weapons. They needed weapons because Celts lived in tribes, and they needed to protect their land, farms and belongings from other tribes who often stole them. They also needed weapons to protect themselves against, and eventually fight the Romans, who in time invaded them and took over. Watch this video to learn more, then I would like you to choose your activity. The first activity is to design and draw a Celtic warrior shield. Otherwise, you could make a shield using resources that you may have available around the house (I understand this could be difficult at the moment!). There are some pictures below, but a good idea is to cut out a shield shape from cardboard and then paint/draw on it. There are plenty of videos on Youtube that you may also find useful if you type 'how to make a celtic shield' but this video is particularly useful. I would love to see your designs or your actual made shields so do email me them!
Good morning Year 5. It was sooo lovely to see lots of you yesterday!! It really put a huge smile on my face for the entire day and Mrs Happe and I really enjoyed it. It's nice to hear that you all did too and it was a great chance to catch up and see each other. The time flew by and we were chatting for so long, the conversation timed out so I apologise if any of you wanted to say more! If you do have anything else to share with the class please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org and I will add it to our page. I have already had some pictures and videos, so keep them coming and I will create a class slideshow over the weekend. Don't forget this can be anything at all, not just school work, including books you've read, art work you've produced, crafting, baking - anything at all!
Have you seen the Great Gade Valley Year 5 quiz Mrs Happe and I have created for you? We were reflecting on some of the learning we have done this year and wondered how good your memories are! Have a go at answering the questions and then send me your answers. I will announce the winner on Monday so you have lots of time to complete it. On the video, you may not be able to see the questions as well, so I have attached a copy of the questions above. Good luck!
Today is the deadline for the golden tickets draw, so make sure you have sent your 5 reads in. Some of you asked in the video call what to do if you have run out of space in your reading record - remember you can just email the golden tickets address saying what you read.
Have a wonderful weekend and remember you are all CHAMPS!!
English: Please complete this writing lesson where you will be writing your own diary entry. Remember to include all the features, and don't forget to magpie any words or phrases you liked from the previous lesson. I am excited to read them all!
Spellings:Please also complete the spelling activity above. You will not be able to click on the spellings, but instead you can write down the correct spellings. For an extra challenge: how many of each word can you spell correctly in 1 minute?
Maths: Complete this maths challenge by completing all the questions. These questions cover lots of different aspects of maths, including word problems, long multiplication and coordinates. The answers are given at the end, so remember to mark your work!
Computing: Please complete this computing lesson explaining what bugging and debugging algorithms means. Watch the videos, then either choose an activity to complete, or practise giving instructions to a sprite on Scratch. You can access Scratch for free through the website and clicking 'Start creating'. Otherwise, if you have the app you could try that. I'd love to see your creations, especially as I know this class are so good at Scratch, so do send them to me, or if you can't save them, then a printscreen with your sprite and algorithms would be fantastic!
Reading: Please complete the activity above where you will be practising your inference skills. Remember inferences are conclusions reached from a text based on evidence and reasoning, so you will need to think carefully about what you have read and identify any clues to help with your answers!
TT Rockstars: Can you earn 1500 coins?
Hello everyone. Well it's nearly the end of another week and you should give yourself a big pat on the back for all your hard work so far this week.

We really miss you all and hope to see all of your faces We are really looking forward to it!
One of the activities I have set for you today is an art lesson all about optical illusions It is really fun and I had a go myself, so I thought I'd share with you my piece of art. Do you like it? I had to be really peserverant and attentive, especially with the shading! I would love to see your art too when you have finished, as well as any other creative activities that you have been up to!
Finally, have you seen yesterday's briefing? It is very different to our ordinary briefings so make sure you have a look - you will really enjoy it!! I wonder if any of you have been calling loved ones during this time? Good morning everyone. Did you watch the Daily Briefing yesterday? Look out for Mrs Parkins and Ms Field - can you guess what nurses they are dressed up as? This was to celebrate International Nurses Day yesterday.
Some people are finding the Secret Reader tricky this week and not many are guessing correctly! I wonder if any more Year 5's will be able to tell who it is? I have to admit I already know because I filmed it so I am keeping quiet!
As I mentioned yesterday, I would like to see all your smiling faces on a zoom video call on Thursday 14th May. I will be hosting a session at 11am that day, and would love to see as many of you as possible. Your parents will get an email about this, so ask them to check. On the day your parents will also get a text before the meeting with a special code that you need to log in. Unfortunately we only came 4th, so I encourage you to get back onto TT Rockstars and play as much as you can this week to try and boost our place again! Mr Barron also talks about how important it is to be reading. I have used this opportunity to read lots and I hope you are enjoying some good books too! And of course, make sure you send your 5 reads to the golden tickets address!
Also, have a look at the Secret Reader page later on today and see if you can guess who it is. Well done to the children who have been getting them right consistently from Year 5! I wonder if there will be any new names from Year 5 who have guessed the reader correctly?
Finally, I am very excited to let you know that in the process of arranging a Zoom video call with the whole class, myself and Mrs Happe so we can see each other and catch up! I am hoping to arrange this for Thursday 14th May at 11am, so do ask your parents to check their emails today for more information. I will also include more details on this on Wednesday's post.

Any interesting facts from your own research can also be included on your poster. Don't forget to make it colourful and include pictures!!
Reading: Please read to an adult for 15 minutes. Remember to record this in your planners to count towards your 5 reads.
TT Rockstars and Numbots: Please play these games for at least 10 minutes each.
Good morning everyone. Thank you for all the fantastic work that you have been sending through, especially your VE Day work. I was really impressed with the quality and how much effort you have been putting in so well done you!! You are true Gade Valley Learning CHAMPS. I am regularly updating our class slideshow with all your amazing work so make sure to keep checking it to have a look at what everyone has been up to! Thank you parents as well for all your support and kind messages.
Since it is VE Day tommorow, I will not be posting any work. We have created a new VE Day page though with lots of great activities and celebration ideas for you to have a look at and choose to do if you wish. This is also where our next Gade Valley slideshow will be posted when it is ready with all of our buntings so do look out for that!
Earlier this week I told you about all the books that I have been enjoying reading and some of you have kindly emailed me book suggestions to add to my reading list - thank you for that! I wanted to let you know that if you are running out of books to read or would just like to have a look at some new ones, there is an excellent website called Oxford Owl where you can access a range of e-books for free! You will need to ask your parents to sign up to it though, but it is completely free to do so. Another website which allows you to read free eBooks is myON which offers thousands of fiction and non-fiction books. Your parents will not need to sign up to access books on this website. Have a good look through at these websites and I hope you enjoy reading your next book!
Here is today's activities. I hope you have a wonderful bank holiday weekend!

Being able to crack coded messages from Germany helped us to win World War Two. Watch this video to find out more, then have a go at working out the coded message in the activity attached above.
Reading: Please read for 15 minutes. This doesn't have to be your AR book, and can be anything including newspapers, magazines , non-fiction books and so on. Don't forget to let us know that you have read 5 times or more this week by sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org. I hope we get another Year 5 winner! Good luck!!
TT Rockstars: Can you earn 2000 coins?
Hello everyone. Wasn't it lovely to have some sunshine yesterday! It was nice to be in school again yesterday and I got lots of jobs done. It was made even nicer as I had a special delivery of these gorgeous cakes from Caitlin - thank you so much for these, they were delicious and put a smile on mine and the rest of the staff's faces. As you can see Mrs Happe and I were thoroughly enjoying them!! I wonder if any of you are baking at the moment? I'd love to see some pictures.
Did you see the briefing yesterday? It is a fun one and there is a special quiz given by Miss Knott. If you think you know any of the answers do email them to me. Also, if you have any questions that you would like answered in the briefing let me know! This can be anything you like about school or the staff! There's also a reminder to check out the Wellbeing page and the PE page if you haven't already.
There is also another Secret Reader on the website, so do have a look and send in your guesses.
This is a final reminder to complete your VE bunting if you haven't already and send it to email@example.com to be in the Gade Valley video. The deadline is today so do make sure you send them in in time!! It would be lovely to see lots of you with your buntings. I have added a picture of mine to show you an example!
Have a great day and I look forward to seeing more pictures of your fabulous work!

Please also complete the spellings at the end of the lesson.
Maths: Please complete the Maths lesson which revises how to use short division division with calculations that have remainders. Watch the videos to practise using division in real life situations, and then complete the activities.
Reading: Read a book for 15 minutes and record this in your planner. Once you have your 5 reads, please let us know by emailing golden.tickets.herts.sch.uk so you can enter the golden ticket draw. We had our first Year 5 winner - can we get another?
History/Art: We are continuing to learn about VE day, and yesterday you learnt lots about what it is and why it is celebrated. Today, I would like you to design a medal to honour the soldiers who fought in the Second World War. Please look at the attachment above to give you a better idea of what it is you need to do. I would really like to see what you come up with!
TT Rockstars and Numbots: Please play these games for at least 15 minutes.
Hello Year 5. Yesterday I went out for a walk and each time I go out I discover new places that I didn't know were so close to me! I came across some stables which had lots of horses in. I took some pictures to show you. I wonder what you are discovering when you're out and about? I also thought I'd show you some forget-me-nots I've been growing. Do you like the pot? It was a gift and it makes it look like the person is growing hair! If you are growing anything too at the moment, do send me pictures! You might inspire me on what to grow next. I've also added to the slideshow of your work with some of the pictures you've sent me this week so far.
Did you see yesterday's daily briefing? Mr Barron and Mrs Russ talk about VE day and have an example of some bunting for you to see. Don't forget to send pictures of your bunting for VE day to firstname.lastname@example.org by Wednesday to be part of the next Gade Valley video. Also, if you have any questions you would like answered in our briefings please email them to me and we will try our best to answer. This can be anything from what's your favourite colour to what football team do you support!
I am really enjoying reading my newest book lately. It's called The Star-Spun Web and it's all about a girl who has mysterious powers and is trying to figure out what world she has come from. I hope you are enjoying lots of reading too. Don't forget to read at least 5 times this week too and send details of those 5 reads to email@example.com when you have done. Remember: we want to have the most golden tickets this week! I think we can do that if we are really motivated and perseverant.
Here are today's activities. I hope you enjoy them and have a fantastic day. I will be in school and missing you lots!

Good morning Year 5, I hope you had a fantastic weekend. I have been on lots of walks, and on Friday I was fortunate enough to see a real life rainbow in the sky! I love seeing the rainbows and positive messages in people's windows but it was extra special to see a real one. Speaking of rainbows, I wonder if any of you have rainbows or positive messages in your windows, or a rainbow ready for our display as part of Mr Barron's challenge? If you have I'd love to see it, so do email them to me!
I have also been using this time as an opportunity to read lots of books I have been meaning to read for a while. I have chosen lot of books that are good Year 5 to help me with some ideas for what could be our next class book whenever we return. I wonder if you have any recommendations? Please email me any books you have been enjoying reading at home (they do not have to be your AR books!)
I wanted to congratulate you for rising to the challenge I set you last week, which was to come in the top 3 places of the TT Rockstars leaderboard. We did it!! I am really pleased and a big well done to you all for putting in that extra effort! A special well done to Ed Snider, Nina Andrews and Tommy Owen for getting the most coins for our class! Please continue to work hard at TT Rockstars to further improve our place on the leaderboard.
Since you were so good, I am going to set you another challenge: to have the class with the most golden ticket entries this week. As I said earlier, I have been reading lots at home lately, so I am sure you have had lots of time to as well. Please email your 5 reads to firstname.lastname@example.org to enter! Good luck!
Finally, something new that hopefully the whole school will contribute to. We would like to make a bunting slideshow to celebrate the V.E.Day 75th anniversary. You or your family need to make an A4 sized decorated bunting shape which you could decorate however you wish. Take a photo of yourselves holding it and send to email@example.com, by the end of next Wednesday please.

Maths: Please complete the maths lesson on multiplying using the grid method. Watch the video explaining how to use this method, and then complete the activities.
Reading: Please read for 15 minutes and record this. Remember we need 5 reads from everyone this week to complete our challenge of being the class with the most golden tickets.
Art: Please complete your bunting for VE day and send a picture of you holding it to firstname.lastname@example.org.
PE: Have a look at Go Noodle and choose a video to complete. There are lots of things on there such as Zumba, fitness and coordination videos!
Well it's Friday and we are into a new month! I was very busy in school yesterday with Mrs Happe, we sorted out lots of resources in our cupboards and drawers and gave the classroom a good tidy. We also had a sneaky rummage through Year 1's dressing up box - did you like the picture on our page? We hope it made you smile, although it was difficult to choose things that would actually fit us!!
Have you seen yesterday's Daily Briefing? There is a special guest appearance from a certain teacher that you may recognise! We would like to hear any questions that you may have at the moment for us to answer in future briefings, so if you do have a question you would like answered please email me on email@example.com and we will choose a few and try our best to answer them.
In today's briefing, the TT Rockstars results will be announced. I have my fingers and toes crossed that we will have met our goal of being in the top 3 places on TT Rockstars. We have our last battle against Year 4 today between 10 and 11am. Be warned Year 4 did very well last time so lets put in an extra effort and be even more motivated to make sure we win!! Let's do this Year 5!
Also I wonder if you have managed to guess the new Secret Reader yet? Don't forget to send your guesses to firstname.lastname@example.org if you think you know who it is! I definitely know who it is!!!
Finally, make sure you have sent details of your 5 reads to email@example.com. It would be great to get a Year 5 winner!! I am also looking forward to hearing your 5 word book reviews as part of the Oompa Loompa challenge. Well done to all the children who guessed mine right yesterday! It was in fact Kensuke's Kingdom!! Can you guess the one on the Golden Tickets page?
I hope you all have a fantastic weekend and remember to keep safe and keep smiling.
English: Please complete this English lesson and write your own character description. There's plenty of impressive vocabulary and sentence starters to magpie and use in your writing. You can also using the writing frame to help you if you need to. I'm really looking forward to reading these. Please also have a go at the spellings at the beginning of the lesson.
Maths: Please use this BBC Bitesize Maths lesson to learn about short division. Watch the videos first and then click on the activity. There are are different challenges in this activity, you only need to choose one to do depending on your confidence. The higher the challenge, the bigger the number are that you have to divide by. So if you are really confident with the method, try the challenge with the 3 stars which uses short division with 4 digit numbers. If you are not able to make/print the resources, just simply choose a challenge and solve the calculations in your home learning book then mark them.
Art: Please complete this Art lesson and continue to learn about and experiment with producing different textures. It is a really fun and calming activity and I know we have had a bit of practise of some of this at school so I am confident you will produce lots of beautiful pieces, especially after seeing your fantastic work from last week!
Reading: Please read a book for 15 minutes and make a note of what you have read. I would like you to also take part in the Oompa Loompa challenge on the Golden Tickets page (as I mentioned earlier on) and send your 5 word reviews to the address given.
TT Rockstars: Take part in the Battle of the Bands against Year 4 between 10 and 11am. This is our last battle and last chance to improve our place on the leaderboard!
Good morning Year 5. Have you had a look at the AMAZING Gade Valley's Got Talent video? If not you definitely have to watch it. I was so impressed to see everybody's talents and it was lovely to see everyone's smiling faces!
Did you know that today is Captain Tom Moore's birthday? We completed a reading comprehension on him before and learnt that he has raised millions of pounds for the NHS by walking 100 laps of his garden before his 100th birthday. It really is an incredible story! Today I have set another comprehension about him so we can learn more!
In yesterday's Daily Briefing, Mr Barron talked about having a 'glass half full' attitude and the importance of being optimistic, positive and hopeful during this time. I am pleased to hear that lots of you are coping really well and are settling into a fantastic routine and some of you are even learning new skills to keep you busy which is excellent. I wanted to remind you today that you are all doing a brilliant job and I am truly amazed at your effort and using your CHAMP and growth mindset whilst you are tackling home learning. Remember to just do what you can and if you find something challenging, to persevere! I am so very proud of you all.
Finally, there is a new reading challenge going on at the moment as mentioned in the briefing. The challenge is to write a review of a book in less than 5 words! Please see the Golden Tickets page for more information.
Here's mine: "Boy gets stranded on island" Can you guess what book I mean? Email me your guess and I'll reveal which book it is tomorrow! I can't wait to hear some of yours.
English: Please use the Oak Academy SPaG lesson which revises relative clauses and relative pronouns. This work links to the unit of work that you have been completing this week on character descriptions. I am interested to see how creative you are with your sentences in the activity. There is also a spelling activity to complete at the end of this lesson.
Maths: Please continue the unit of work on translations with the Oak Academy Maths lesson. In this lesson, you will be exploring a 4 quadrant grid and giving co-ordinates for points on a graph using negative numbers, as well as giving co-ordinates for translations.
TT Rockstars: Unfortunately, we did not win the battle against Year 2! However, we did manage to beat Year earlier this week so let's be extra motivated to win another. Today's battle is with Year 3 between 10-11am.
Challenge: Let's be in at least the top 3 places of TTRockstars class leader board this week!
Mathsframe: Please click here and choose a game to revise decimals.
PE: Today would normally be PE for us in school, so I just wanted to remind you to stay active at home. Please complete a Joe Wicks video today, or choose one of the activities from the PE page.
Reading: 15 minutes of reading please. Don't forget to send a note or picture of your reading record to say that you have read 5 times to firstname.lastname@example.org
Hello Year 5. I hope you got plenty of practise on TT Rockstars yesterday in preparation for today's battle. We will be battling against Y2 today between 10-11am. We did really well against Year 6 so let's put in lots of effort in and get another win!! This will also help up towards our class challenge: we want to be in at least the top three places on the TT Rockstars leaderboard on Friday. I know you are up for the challenge!!
There is a new Secret Reader on the page. I struggled to guess for a while but I think I have finally worked out who it is! Have you? Also, Miss Knott has given some super helpful top tips to manage home learning so check out yesterday's Daily Briefing to have a look.
I wanted to tell you all how impressed I am with the effort you are making with the presentation of your work at home. I can see you are being very attentive to your handwriting and it's lovely to see your handwriting improving all the time and getting neater and neater! It's also brilliant to see you using lead ins and joins much better - well done and keep it up!!
Here is today's learning - enjoy!!

Maths: Please continue to learn about translations with the Oak National Academy's Maths lesson. Here you will be building on the previous lessons from this week, and using your knowledge about translating shapes to plot, translate and re-plot lines on a grid.
Science: Find out all about what igneous rocks are and how they are formed with this Science lesson with the Oak National Academy. There is a really cool demonstration on here using chocolate and ice to help you understand the process and you will learn lots about the Earth's structure as well as how to recognise igneous rocks.
TT Rockstars: Please compete in the Battle of the Bands against Year 2 between 10-11am.
Numbots: Please practise your addition and subtraction by playing this for at least 5 minutes.
Reading: Make sure you read and make a note of this in order to enter the golden ticket draw. If you have already read 5 times since last Friday, please send a picture of your reading record/type in an email what you have read to email@example.com
Good morning Year 5. I hope you are all keeping well. I was pleased to hear from so many of you again yesterday.
Guess what! We won the TT Rockstars battle against Year 6! A big WELL DONE to you all! I told you we could do it, and it's made me really confident for this week's class challenge that I have set. Today we do not have a battle scheduled with another class as they are currently battling eachother, but we will every other day this week. This gives us perfect opportunity to get lots of practise before tommorow's round. Remember:
Challenge: To finish in at least one of the top 3 places in the class leaderboard on Friday! We can do this!
Did you get a chance to watch the Daily Briefing yesterday? Mrs Simons has gathered data about which class is sending their work to teachers the most. We did really well with 73% of the class responding, so don't forget to keep sending things through and if you haven't already, just send me your proudest pieces of work so far to firstname.lastname@example.org. Thank you to those who already have and thank you parents for all your support!
Today there will be a new Secret Reader. Can you guess which member of staff is reading? Last time we had lots of Year 5 children guess correctly, I wonder if we can get it right again! Just email your guesses to the email address given on the page.
Finally, just to let you know that Accelerated Reader is now accessible from home. This means you can be completing quizzes on books that you have read at home and any you haven't had a chance to do in school. You just need to log in and search for the book that you would like to do a quiz on.
Have a good day and remember to stay safe and keep smiling!
Reading: Please complete the Oak National Academy Reading lesson. Again, you will be looking at character descriptions but this time focussing on word meaning in a text and how to clarify word meaning questions. TOP TIP: Think about which words you think you could magpie in your writing later this week!
Maths: Please use the Oak National Academy Maths lesson to continue to learn about translations. In this lesson, you will be describing translations, and moving all four vertices of a shape. You will also be describing how a shape has been translated from one place to another.
TT Rockstars: Please spend 15 minutes on TT Rockstars to help complete the class challenge of coming in one of the top 3 places on the class leaderboard on Friday.
Please read for 15 minutes and record this to count towards your 5 reads a week to send to email@example.com.
Good morning Year 5! I hope you had a fantastic weekend and enjoyed the wonderful weather that we had! I spent lots of time outside enjoying the sunshine in my garden!
First of all, well done to all the children who guessed the Secret Reader - we had the most correct guesses in a class which is brilliant! These were revealed in the Daily Briefing in case you missed it. Also a big well done to all our top 3 children on the TT Rockstars leaderboard from Friday's results! You did amazing :)
Challenge for this week: Get Strumming Steadmans to at least the top 3 places of the class leaderboard this week. I know we can do this Year 5!!
I'd also like to thank you for sharing your work on Friday - I was especially impressed with your reports as well as your art work. They were so detailed and I can tell you were so motivated and put lots of detail into these. You are showing great CHAMP skills with your home learning so keep it up!
Here is today's learning. Remember to keep sending me your proudest pieces!
Reading: Please complete the Oak National Academy Reading lesson online lesson for reading today. Here you will practise fact retrieval from character descriptions. TOP TIP: Keep a close eye to the word of the day and any other effective vocabulary as this is going to help you with our writing this week!
Maths: Please complete the Oak National Academy Maths lesson. Here you will be learning about translations of shapes. This first lesson will remind you about coordinates and explain what translations are. Don't forget to do the quiz before and after the lesson to check your learning!
History: Our new topic this half term is The Celts. To introduce this unit of work, I would like you to start thinking about what you might already know about the Celts and what you would like to learn. You can use the table provided or you can record this in your home learning books. Please leave the last column in the table blank about what we have learnt - we will be filling this in once we have completed the topic! For an extra challenge, once you have completed this activity, you can start researching some fun facts about the Celts and keep note of them to help you with the rest of our learning on this topic.
TT Rockstars: Exciting news! This week we have a daily battle of the bands between 10-11am. Please log in to TT Rockstars during this time to practise your times tables but also help us beat the other classes! Challenge: Let's get Year 5 to the top the leaderboard!!

Hello Year 5!
Did you get the e-card that myself and Mrs Happe sent to you all? I hope you enjoyed reading it. You might need to ask your parents to check their emails if not!
Yesterday I was in school with Mrs Happe and I showed her all your lovely pieces of work. She was so impressed and we were both very proud. We are missing you all lots.
I'm looking forward to finding out which class had the most amount of Golden Tickets this week - hopefully we will see a Year 5 winner!
There is also a new Secret Reader posted and you have until 12pm today to guess who the teacher is. I could tell who it was straight away! I wonder if you can?
Don't forget today is the last day to send in your entry for the Gade Valley's Got Talent video if you haven't already! I can't wait to see what everybody has been busy doing while they have been at home. I wonder if anybody has any secret talents in the class!
Here is your last piece of home learning for the week. I hope you have a great weekend and get to enjoy the sunshine!
English: Now that you have chosen your electronic device about your favourite electronic device and planned some information about it, please now write your report about it! You can use the example of the report Ipads to help you, and the writing frame attached today. Don't forget you will need: a title, subheadings, lots of facts, a picture and to use the present tense. For an extra challenge, can you include an example of parenthesis? You can choose a template to write this up on from the PDF attached today, or you could write it on your own piece of paper, or even type it onto the computer! I am really looking forward to reading your reports.
TT Rockstars: Can you improve the number of coins earned?
Mathsframe: Please click here and choose a game to practise multiplying fractions.
Reading: Please read for 15 minutes and record this in your reading record.
Really pleased to see all your home learning so far - well done for all your hard work. I hope you have had a chance by now to explore some of the other pages on our Home Learning part of the website. A big well done to the children who guessed the Secret Reader! Look out for the next video and keep guessing.
Just to remind you that we really would like to see what you have been up to during your time at home and any new skills you have learnt as part of our Gade Valley's Got Talent video. Look at the page for more information. I look forward to seeing what you have all been up to :)
Also, did you manage to complete Miss Knott's challenge from her daily briefing video and go without electricity for an hour as part of Earth Day? Well done if you did, I'm sure it was a challenge but it's always good to do our part to look after the environment!
Remember to send a picture of your signed reading record to email@example.com by tomorrow! Let's try and be the class with the most entries to get an extra golden ticket draw!
I hope you enjoy today's learning and have a good day.
English: So far, you have read an example of a non-chronological report about Ipads and found all the features, and added parenthesis to sentences about Ipads and other electronic devices. I would like you to write your own non-chronological report about your favourite electronic device (it can be anything!), but before we are ready to do this, we need to choose one to research and plan our report. So, for today's task I would like you to choose which electronic device you would like to write about (it can be Ipads too!) and research some facts and subheadings to prepare for your report. Please use the template provided to note down your ideas. This will really help you for tommorow's writing! Also, do look at this video explaining what a report is, and use the Ipad report example to help you with some ideas to research! I'm looking forward to hearing your ideas.
Art: Please click here to follow the link to the Oak National Academy's art lesson called Texture Treasure Hunt. This is all about how to create different textures and there's a lovely activity where you can create different textures using different items in the house. I would love to see what you create! English: Here are my top tips to help you with your SPaG activity.
1. Relative clauses add information to sentences by using a relative pronoun such as who, that or which.
2. A conjunction is a word used to connect clauses. A subordinating conjunction introduces a subordinating clause, e.g. although, because, even though, since, so, when.
3. A modal verb expresses necessity or possibility, such as include must, shall, will, should.
4. Adverbs of probability are used to show how sure we are about a situation or event (definitely, certainly, clearly, obviously etc).
5. A determiner is a word which modifies a noun within a sentence, giving it more context for the reader. For instance, “this chair” or “my book”.

NumBots is an online game and playing little and often will significantly improve your recall and understanding of number bonds and addition and subtraction facts.
Use your TT Rockstars login and aim to play the games for 5 minutes a day. Each correct answer wins coins which you can spend on the online shop.
Story Mode – the emphasis is on learning the ideas and concepts behind addition and subtraction so it features more diagrams, shapes and question styles.
Challenge Mode – the emphasis is more on speed of recall of key facts, like number bonds to 10, doubling small numbers or adding & taking away in your head.
